Archdiocese of Hartford

The Diocese of Hartford was established in 1843, covering Connecticut and Rhode Island before Rhode Island became its own diocese. Hartford was elevated to an archdiocese in 1953 by Pope Pius XII, now serving Hartford, New Haven, and Litchfield counties in Connecticut. With roughly 170 parishes, the archdiocese is anchored by the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Hartford and traces its roots to the earliest waves of Irish Catholic immigrants who arrived in the 1820s to build the state's canals.
