The Diocese of Buffalo was erected in 1847 by Pope Pius IX, split from the Diocese of New York, and covers eight counties in Western New York: Erie, Niagara, Genesee, Orleans, Chautauqua, Wyoming, Cattaraugus, and Allegany. It serves around 176 parishes and is home to an unusual concentration of national shrines, including Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica in Lackawanna and the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima near Niagara Falls.
