The Diocese of Charlotte, established in 1972, covers the 46 counties of western North Carolina from the Piedmont to the Appalachian Mountains. Its cathedral is the Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Charlotte, consecrated in 1939. A distinctive landmark of the diocese is Belmont Abbey, founded by Benedictine monks in 1876 and elevated to an abbey by Pope Leo XIII in 1884 — one of the oldest Catholic institutions in the American South.
