The Diocese of Davenport was erected on May 8, 1881 by Pope Leo XIII, carved out of the southern territory of the Diocese of Dubuque. It covers 22 counties in southeastern Iowa along the Mississippi River and includes 81 parishes. Sacred Heart Cathedral, built in 1891, was the first cathedral in the United States dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The diocese also founded St. Ambrose University in 1882, one of only eleven diocesan universities in the country.
