The Diocese of Scranton was established on March 3, 1868, when Pope Pius IX separated 11 counties of northeastern Pennsylvania from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. It covers Lackawanna, Luzerne, and nine surrounding counties — territory shaped by coal mining and railroad industries that drew waves of Irish, Polish, Slovak, and Italian Catholic immigrants. The mother church is the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Scranton, consecrated in 1884.
