Erected in 1944 by Pope Pius XII from the eastern portion of the Diocese of Columbus, the Diocese of Steubenville covers 13 counties across southeastern Ohio along the Ohio River valley. Its cathedral is Holy Name Cathedral in Steubenville. The diocese is home to Franciscan University of Steubenville, a nationally known center of orthodox Catholic formation founded in 1946, and serves roughly 54 parishes across some 5,900 square miles of Appalachian Ohio.
