Established in 1982 from territory carved out of three neighboring dioceses, the Diocese of Victoria covers ten counties along the South Texas coastal plain, from Matagorda to Goliad, with about 67 parishes. Its cathedral is Our Lady of Victory in Victoria. The diocese has deep roots: St. Mary's Parish in Victoria, originally founded in 1824, became in 1840 the first Catholic parish canonically established in the Republic of Texas.
