Diocese of Youngstown

The Diocese of Youngstown was established in 1943 by Pope Pius XII, carved out of the Diocese of Cleveland to serve six northeastern Ohio counties: Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning, Portage, Stark, and Trumbull. The area's Catholic roots go back to 1817, when Irish settlers gathered for Mass in a log cabin near Dungannon — making St. Philip Neri Parish in Dungannon the oldest in the diocese. Today about 100 parishes serve the region, which grew around the steel and manufacturing industries that drew waves of immigrant Catholic communities throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
