The Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saint Nicholas in Chicago was established in 1961 by Pope John XXIII to serve Ukrainian Greek Catholics across the Midwest and Western United States, Alaska, and Hawaii. Its cathedral, St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral on Chicago's north side, traces its roots to 1905 when Ukrainian and Ruthenian immigrants founded the original parish, and its striking Byzantine structure with thirteen domes was completed in 1915. The eparchy celebrates the Byzantine rite and today encompasses 40 parishes.
