A Word from Father Matt

Allow me to introduce myself... okay, just kidding. "A Word from Father Matt" is a new addition Christ in and, more specifically, about the life that Christ is raising up here at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral. Recently, I found in the rectory garage a large cube that said "1954". It was the cornerstone of the original Saints Simon and Jude parish church, what we now know as Smith Hall. You will see if you come up to the front of our current cathedral church a square that says "1965". This is the Cathedral's cornerstone. While the stone does not have a function anymore—otherwise Smith Hall would have fallen down—the cornerstone represents that without which our Church could not stand: Christ. Psalm 118:22 says, "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." Christ was rejected and died on the Cross. But God our Father raised Him from the dead and made Him the head of His Body, the Church. Therefore, we are built on Christ and build nothing without Christ. Saint Paul reminds us, "So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit" (Ephesians 2:19-22). May it be so.
