Finding Rest in Christ: A Stewardship Reflection

The readings for the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time offer a gentle and encouraging message about humility, trust, and rest in God. Here at Our Mother of Sorrows Parish, these words speak directly to our community as we strive to live as faithful stewards in our daily lives. In the first reading, the prophet Zechariah describes a king who comes in humility, "meek and riding on an ass." Unlike worldly rulers who seek power and control, this king brings peace. As members of Our Mother of Sorrows, this reminds us that leadership in our parish—whether in ministry, family life, or service—is not about recognition or control, but about humble service. Each of us is called to use our gifts—our time, talents, and resources—for the good of our parish family and the wider Tucson community. St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, reminds us that we live not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit dwelling within us. This truth lies at the heart of stewardship in our parish life. Everything we have is a gift from God. Whether we are volunteering in parish ministries, supporting one another in times of need, or simply offering kindness to a neighbor, we are called to live by the Spirit, placing God's will above our own desires. In the Gospel, Jesus offers a comforting invitation: "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest." In the midst of the busyness and challenges of life here in Tucson, these words remind us that Our Mother of Sorrows is not just a place we come to fulfill an obligation, but a spiritual home where we encounter Christ's peace. His yoke is easy, and His burden light especially when we share our lives with Him and with one another as a parish community. Ultimately, these readings show that stewardship is rooted in trust. As a parish family, when we recognize that all we have comes from God, we are freed to live with gratitude rather than fear. By embracing Christ's gentle way in our homes, our parish, and our community, we discover that stewardship is not a burden, but a path to peace. So, as members of Our Mother of Sorrows, let us strive to live each day with gratitude, humility, and trust in God. May we use our time and talents to serve one another, offer our daily work as a gift to Him, and place our worries in Christ's hands. In doing so, stewardship becomes not just something we do, but a joyful and peaceful way of life shared together.
