Resting in Christ

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The image on this week's bulletin presents a beautiful paradox of the Christian life. We see a disciple carrying a cross yet surrounded by light. The burden is real, but so is the peace. The cross has not disappeared, but it is no longer crushing because it is being carried in the presence of God.

In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus extends one of the most comforting invitations found in all of Scripture: "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves."

We live in a world that is tired. Many people carry burdens of anxiety, stress, family struggles, illness, loneliness, grief, financial worries, or spiritual discouragement. Often, we look for rest in distractions, entertainment, or simply keeping ourselves busy. Yet sooner or later we discover that these things cannot give lasting peace.

Jesus offers something deeper. He does not promise a life without crosses. Instead, He promises to walk with us and to carry our burdens with us. True rest is not found in the absence of difficulties; it is found in the presence of Christ.

Two of the greatest gifts Christ has given His Church for this purpose are the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Eucharistic Adoration.

In Confession, we bring to the Lord the burdens of our sins, failures, and wounds. There we encounter not condemnation but mercy. How many people carry unnecessary spiritual weight simply because they have forgotten the healing grace available in this sacrament. A good confession restores peace to the soul and renews our friendship with God.

In Eucharistic Adoration, we come before the Lord who remains truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. We do not come because we have all the answers, but because we need His presence. Like the disciples who rested near Jesus, we learn to place our worries, fears, and struggles before Him. In silence, He teaches us to trust.

The world tells us to rely only on ourselves. Jesus tells us: "Come to me."

How can we live this invitation more fully?

• Spend time with Jesus every day.
• Set aside at least ten minutes each day for prayer. Put away distractions and simply speak with the Lord. Tell Him what weighs on your heart and listen for His voice.
• Return regularly to Confession.
• Do not wait until serious sin enters your life. Frequent Confession helps us grow in humility, receive God's mercy, and find freedom from the burdens that keep us from spiritual peace.
• Visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
• Whether during Eucharistic Adoration or simply by stopping by the church for a few moments, spend time in the presence of Christ. Bring Him your concerns, your family, your work, and your hopes. Let Him carry what you cannot carry alone.
• The figure in the image carries a cross, but the light behind reminds us that Christ is near. The same Lord who calls us to follow Him also invites us to rest in Him. When we place our burdens in His hands, we discover that His yoke is easy, His burden is light, and His love is sufficient for every trial.

May we hear His invitation anew this week: "Come to me." And may we find in His mercy, in Confession, and in His Eucharistic Presence the rest for which our hearts long.
