Catholic in Recovery (CIR)
The aim of Catholic in Recovery is to bring freedom to those with alcohol and drug addictions, behavioral compulsions, and unhealthy attachments. Open to both men and women, we meet every Thursday at 6:30 PM in the Cathedral Parish Center to share our faith, hope and experience in recovery from addictions and unhealthy attachments of all types. We find healing and new life through the help of twelve-step recovery, the Catholic sacraments, scriptures and traditions, and our faithful understanding of Jesus Christ as our Savior. King's Men (Morning Meeting)
Due to growing interest and participation, The King's Men group is excited to announce the launch of a SECOND weekly men's group meeting time. Beginning July 11th, we will offer an additional gathering every Saturday morning from 7:30 – 9:00 AM to complement our usual meeting time on Wednesday nights from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. We gather for brotherhood, accountability, and a deeper commitment to our Lord's call for conversion and holiness, so we can grow as better men, better husbands and better servants of Christ. Rector's Corner - Our Nation's 250th Birthday!
We live in a great country. Our form of government is uniquely shaped to provide the matrix in which freedom, opportunity, and the human spirit can flourish. It was conceived and brought into being by great and courageous men and women. But our country is not "perfect," nor were any of those people who brought it to birth. In fact, the great Constitution of the United States of America begins with these words: "We the people of the United States of America, in order to form a more perfect union…" Perhaps it is a reminder that the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness, in common, must always be refined, defended, and perfected.
Our country has been blessed by God with an abundance of resources and filled with a spirit of innovation and creativity. In so many fields of endeavor, the United States of America has produced results which have raised the standard of living for peoples around the world. With blessing and abundance come the moral obligation to lead and to share. In 1960 a young American President, John F. Kennedy, reminded us of our duty as citizens of this country and of the world. He inspired generations to come by saying: "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."
St. John Paul II loved the United States of America and visited us several times during his papacy. He had witnessed firsthand the sacrifice of blood and treasure made by the United States of America to free Europe from fascism. We should take to heart his words, given as a farewell address upon departing the United States in September of 1987: "America, your deepest identity and truest character as a nation is revealed in the position you take towards the human person. The ultimate test of your greatness lies in the way you treat every human being, but especially the weakest and most defenseless ones. The best traditions of your land presume respect for those who cannot defend themselves. If you want equal justice for all, and true freedom and lasting peace, then, America, defend life!
Feeding the poor and welcoming refugees;
Reinforcing the social fabric of this nation;
Promoting the true advancement of women;
Securing the rights of minorities;
Pursuing disarmament, while guaranteeing legitimate defense;
Today, therefore, my final prayer is this: that God will bless America, so that she may increasingly become - and truly be - and long remain one Nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. May God bless America!"
