A Message from Fr. Luis: Freedom and Faith
This weekend we celebrate the Independence Day of the United States, July 4th, and this Sunday's Gospel makes an important call: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Each year, Independence Day invites us to remember the value of freedom. We see flags, fireworks, and family gatherings to give thanks for the gift of living in a nation founded on the desire to be free. However, as Christians, we know that there is an even deeper freedom: the freedom that comes from living united to God. In this Sunday's Gospel, Jesus presents us with a surprising path. He does not speak of power, success, or prestige. Rather, he gives thanks to the Father because his mysteries are revealed to the simple and humble. He opens his arms to all who feel weary, worried, or burdened by life's difficulties.
How relevant this message is! We live in a society that constantly pushes us to do more, produce more, and worry about more things. Many people carry invisible burdens: family problems, economic uncertainty, loneliness, illness, or worries about the future. Amidst all this, Jesus does not offer us a magic formula, but his own companionship. He invites us to walk with Him and learn from His humble and generous heart.
The celebration of independence reminds us that freedom is not simply about being able to do what we want. True freedom consists in choosing good, loving, and living according to God's will. A person may have many options and yet feel enslaved by selfishness, fear, or anxiety. Christ comes to free us precisely from these inner chains. Therefore, as we give thanks to God for His blessings and pray for our nation, we can also ask ourselves: Am I living the freedom of the children of God? This July 4th, we give thanks for the gift of freedom. And this Sunday, let us again hear Jesus' invitation: "Come to me," there we will find the rest that the world cannot give and the freedom that no one can take from us.
May the Lord bless our families, our parish, and our nation, and may He grant us to live each day as true disciples of Christ: free to love, free to serve, and free to follow Him with joy.
