Companions on the Journey: Take One Step Closer to Christ

Last weekend, we began our summer invitation to take one step closer to Christ. In this Sunday's Gospel Jesus reminds us why that invitation matters. Jesus doesn't begin with a list of expectations. He begins with an invitation.

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

Those words have offered hope to countless generations. They remind us that no matter where we are on our faith journey, whether joyful, weary, confident, uncertain, or simply trying to keep up with the pace of life, we never walk alone. Christ walks with us, and He invites us to walk with one another.

As we continue living our pastoral theme, Companions on the Journey, I'd like to offer three simple thoughts for reflection.

1. Christ Meets Us Where We Are Summer is often filled with vacations, family gatherings, celebrations, camps, concerts, and community events. It can also be a season of busy schedules and unexpected challenges. The beautiful thing about today's Gospel is that Jesus doesn't tell us to get everything figured out before coming to Him. He simply says, "Come." Whether this is a season of great joy or quiet struggle, Christ meets us exactly where we are and gently invites us to take the next step.

2. We Walk Better Together Faith has always been something we share. Throughout scripture, Jesus calls people into community. He sends the disciples out together. He gathers them around the table. He teaches them, encourages them, and reminds them that they belong to one another. That same invitation continues today. Every time we gather for Mass, cheer on our children, serve a meal at Summer Supper, enjoy a concert with friends, or simply share a conversation after church, we strengthen the bonds that make OLBS a parish family. These moments may seem ordinary, but they remind us that companions make every journey richer.

3. Small Steps Matter Sometimes we think growing in faith requires doing something extraordinary. More often, discipleship grows through ordinary faithfulness.

• One conversation.
• One invitation.
• One hour of service.
• One prayer.
• One new friendship.
• One act of kindness.
• One decision to say yes when Christ calls. Over time, those small steps shape our hearts and help us become the disciples Christ calls us to be. This week, our invitation remains wonderfully simple: Take one step closer to Christ. Perhaps that step is joining us for one of the many opportunities to gather this summer. Perhaps it's introducing yourself to someone you've seen at Mass but never met. Perhaps it's volunteering, praying, serving, or simply making time to be present with your parish family. However you choose to respond, remember that Christ's invitation begins with two simple words: "Come to me." As Companions on the Journey, we answer that invitation together, encouraging one another, supporting one another, and discovering that Christ is present not only in prayer, but also in the friendships, conversations, and shared moments that make parish life such a gift. One step at a time, we draw closer to Him, and together, we help others do the same. This week's invitation, take one step closer to Christ by joining us. —Fr. Arthur
