From Father Jack

Celebrating 250 years since the original "Fourth of July," we allow our hearts to be filled with love for the United States of America, for our homeland, for the people that inhabit it, and for the Constitution, which provides the way of life we cherish. Love of country, patriotism, is a duty for Catholics. According the Catechism of the Catholic Church #2239, "The love and service of one's country follow from the duty of gratitude and belong to the order of charity." Furthermore, "The fourth commandment…shows us the order of charity. God has willed that, after him, we should honor our parents to whom we owe life and who have handed on to us the knowledge of God. We are obliged to honor and respect all those whom God, for our good, has vested with his authority" (CCC 2197). And so we respect and honor the laws and the authority structures of our nation and commonwealth in obedience to God. Rooted in the Ten Commandments, may our July 4th festivities deepen our commitment to pursuing the common good in our land, so well-articulated in the Declaration of Independence. There the Founding Fathers acknowledged that all people are endowed by the Creator with certain inalienable rights, chief among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As Catholics, we pray that the flourishing of our civic life would draw us and our fellow countrymen to authentic love of one another and to devoted worship of the good God who endows us with every spiritual blessing from above.

May God bless America!
