Saint John the Baptist Arrested
It is evident that Our Lord stayed in Jerusalem for some time. After that He came into the land of Judaea and there He abode baptizing. Saint John's Gospel clarifies: Jesus John was baptizing in the north. Some of John's disciples went to Jerusalem. As they went they saw that Our Lord's disciples were baptizing. They noticed, too, that many people were going to Our Lord and listening to His preaching. This was surely not to be endured. Their own leader was obviously a prophet; had not John been specially chosen by God? Had not John lived in the desert with great austerity? Who was this Jesus of Nazareth? Had He not grown up like any other man? So these followers of John argued among themselves. John's disciples came and said to John: "He that was with you beyond the Jordan, to Whom you gave testimony, behold He baptizes and all men come to Him." John took their complaint with patience. Poor men; they knew no better. Their devotedness to him blinded them to Him Who was more excellent. John repeated his lesson: "A man cannot receive anything unless it be given from Heaven; you yourselves bear witness that I said that I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before Him; He must increase, but I must decrease." John, great as he is, is able to forget himself and fulfill his mission of pointing to the Christ. John had begun by preaching near Judaea. He preached fearlessly; even calling the proud Pharisees a "brood of vipers". He continued his preaching in Galilee, the territory of Herod. As before, he preached the truth boldly. He did not hesitate to denounce the evil that Herod had done. Herod had taken his brother's wife for his own. Such a crime, shamelessly, defiantly public, was a scandal. John preached repentance to all, to
the lowly as well as to those in authority. It seems that John had openly faced Herod and charged him with his crime: "John said to Herod: 'It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.'" Herod gave orders that John should be arrested; he had him bound and put in prison. Thus was the voice of John silenced.
John was not entirely confined to solitude in prison; his disciples were allowed to visit him. Even Herod visited John at times; Herod liked to listen to John. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a just and holy man; he kept him in prison and listened to him gladly. Herod respected John and feared him. He also feared the people because they held John to be a prophet. There was one who did not respect John, the woman Herod had illicitly taken as his wife, Herodias.
Herodias had reached such a level of shamelessness that the opinions of men did not matter to her. She hated John and wanted revenge against him because he had called out her sin. Her hatred for John festered in her heart, but for the time being she could do nothing about it. She would bide her time and watch for her opportunity to have her revenge.
