Are you listening? Lent with its invitations to pray, fast, and give charitably may seem like a challenge to do more. Perhaps we embrace this season with resolutions to say more prayers, give up favorite foods or diversions, and be more charitable to persons and organizations. All of those are worthy activities at any time and not just during Lent. However, Lent also calls us to repentance and reflection, to listen to God's voice in the silence of our hearts.
In today's Gospel reading, Jesus goes up the mountain with His special disciples where He is transfigured before them. He is surrounded in brightness and accompanied by Moses and Elijah in the vision. The spectacle is so awe-inspiring for the disciples that Peter declares it is good to be there and asks if it is possible to remain by erecting tents for the three of them. The vision lasts for a moment, but what will last is the voice they hear: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!" God speaks to affirm Jesus' divinity; He instructs us to hear the One who will lead us to Him.
Lent needs time and space in which to hear Jesus speak to us. Let every prayer, sacrifice, and good work of Lent be accompanied by an open mind and heart that will hear Jesus's words of affirmation and direction. He is that good shepherd that leads us through the darkness around us. His voice breaks through the cacophony of anger, hatred, judgement, gossip, and meanness. His voice forgives and comforts, acknowledges and accompanies us, fills us with His light. Let us be transfigured into His joyful missionary disciples.
Our monthly Blood Drive is scheduled for this coming Friday from 11:00 to 5:00 PM in the gym. Please consider offering this gift of life and register to donate. On Saturday, our Middle School students will have a retreat in the gym from 12:30 to 3:30 PM in preparation for the reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep them in your prayers.
