Pastoral Message from the Music Director
"Entrance Antiphon" is a term that most of us are not familiar with, yet we perform a type of entrance antiphon at the beginning of every Sunday Liturgy. Today, we call it the "Entrance" or "Processional" Hymn. For centuries, the antiphon has been sung in monasteries. The text is set to an elaborate musical setting known as Gregorian Chant, which is sung by a highly trained group of musicians known as schola. There is, however, a connection between the Entrance Antiphon and the Entrance Hymn. The connection is found in the text, which binds the two together.
The official antiphon for today's liturgy (the 14th Sunday of Ordinary Time) is "Within your temple, we ponder your loving kindness, O God. As your name, so also your praise reaches to the ends of the earth." This sentiment is proclaimed in a more modern setting of music in our entrance hymn, especially in the last line of the hymn, "Lord of all, to you we raise this our gift of grateful praise." We gather at Mass to give this praise to God. We gather to listen to God's message taught to us by the early prophets. We gather to ask God to put up with our weaknesses. We gather to receive strength and comfort promised by Christ in the Eucharist and in today's Communion Antiphon, "Taste and see the goodness of the Lord."
At the conclusion of today's Mass, we sing, "America the Beautiful," because of the July 4th holiday celebrated this weekend. The theme of the opening hymn, "For the beauty of the earth," is brought back to us as we leave God's temple singing the words, "America! America! God shed His grace on thee..." May we be thankful for the reality that we live in the beauty of America.
