The Clerics of St. Viator had been celebrating Mass at various hotels along the Strip for workers and visitors since 1958. The present church became a reality in 1963 as the Guardian Angel Shrine. When the Diocese of Reno was renamed Reno-Las Vegas in 1977, Guardian Angel was designated as a parish and the Co-Cathedral of the Catholic Church in Nevada. In 1988, Guardian Angel Cathedral received a special indult to celebrate a 2:30 PM Saturday anticipated Mass. The Guardian Angel Cathedral is known for its magnificent stained glass windows, mosaics, murals, and architectural design, and also for its interesting history. In 1995, the Diocese of Las Vegas was established, and Guardian Angel became the Cathedral parish of the new Diocese. In 2023, Pope Francis elevated the Diocese of Las Vegas to a Metropolitan See, an Archdiocese, and named Most Reverend George Leo Thomas, Ph.D., its first Archbishop. As a beacon of Christ's light in the heart of Las Vegas, Guardian Angel Cathedral depends on your support. Standing as one of the oldest remaining landmarks of the 1960s on the Strip, our Cathedral requires continual care beyond what the regular offertory can provide. Volunteer ministry in any Roman Catholic Cathedral is often quite different from that in regular parish settings. The Guardian Angel Cathedral's location right in the heart of the resort corridor of the Las Vegas Strip, ministry here is truly unlike anywhere else. Every single day of the year, Guardian Angel serves the faithful from not only our own archdiocese and nation, but also the faithful from around the world. If you are local, or even a seasonal snowbird, please consider serving the People of God at the Guardian Angel Cathedral as an usher, lector, altar server, or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Later this spring, we are launching a new ministry of Tour Guides and Docents. Training and ongoing catechesis are provided to all who serve here.
