A Letter from the Pastor
Happy 250th Anniversary of our Nation's founding! Happy 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our gospel, Jesus is presented as the embodiment of Wisdom which the Jewish scriptures have referred to as a "reflection of eternal light." Jesus' words would have been revolutionary to His listeners: not only does He present himself as Wisdom Incarnate: suggests that the attainment of Wisdom is a gift to the lowly. It's not the result of the labors of the learned and the clever. Moreover, whereas Jewish tradition holds that God's revelation is fully contained in the law and the prophets. Jesus says that "everything" has been given over to Him.
Jesus uses an image of a yoke. Farmers put yokes on oxen to tie them to a plow. Oxen tied to yokes have no freedom. They go where the farmer commands—just like people with bad habits or addictions.
This week Jesus invites us to take His yoke. Jesus says let me lead you to freedom and life. Jesus pleads: "Let me and my teachings guide every decision you make." "I'll lead you to peace and
meaning in this life and union with God in the next one." Examine your life this week. See if you are tying yourself to a yoke that could hurt you. If so, ask Jesus for help to break free. Then take on His yoke. You'll never look back with regret. Do you make any regular choices that could develop into bad habits or addictions? Could, this habit hurt you or others? Ask Jesus to help you avoid these choices & to follow His will for your life. Jesus will set you free and guide you to freedom.
Speaking of freedom, I want to thank everyone who made a pledge to our Stronger Upon This Rock Capital Campaign. Your pledge towards our $7 million goal will help free us from our $7.216 million that we owe on our current building and land. Once free from this debt, we will have more money to focus on growing St. Anthony's to continue to be a beacon in the northwest. We will be able to educate more children and adults to become stronger Catholics. We will be able to help those in need. The active phase of the campaign is over and we are moving into the redemption phase. If you have not made a pledge, please pick up a
pledge card from the basket by the St. Anthony of Padua statue. Remember any amount pledged over 5 years will help eliminate our debt and set us free.
August will be here before you know it. Our faith formation for youth ages 3-18 years old begin in August. Registrations are occurring now. Our Adult Confirmation begins in September and registration is occurring now. If you are interested in becoming Catholic, we invite you to join us on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. The bulletin has information on these and much more.
Do you want to be free from the chains of addictions? Do you have a loved one suffering from addictions? There is help. We have 5 Alcoholics Anonymous groups, 1 Narcotics Anonymous group, and an Al-anon group. See the bulletin for times.
Do you want to learn more about the Acts of the Apostles? Join us for our Bible Study on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. Are you a high school youth? Join us for a youth group that meets on Wednesday evenings.
Our parish has a lot to celebrate. We have a lot of things going on. As we go through the summer please know that Deacon James, Father Vincent, and myself are holding you in our prayers. If we can help you, please let us know. Happy 250th Anniversary of our Independence! Happy July 4th!!
