You Are What You Eat by Tom Schmidt I n John's Gospel, Jesus gives a long discourse on the Bread of Life. e ,rst part talks of bread as a sign of God's loving care for the people. Like the manna in the desert, Jesus represents God caring for the people in a new way. But the part we hear in today's Gospel is more speci,c. Hesays the bread he will give is his -esh. e leaders of the Jews don't understand. Hopefully, we can do better. In the pagan world at the time of Christ and before, a sacri,ce was also a meal. An animal was ritually killed and burnt (i.e., cooked) to be shared at a meal with the people. e sacri,ce wasagift to the god(s) that joined the people to their deity and also to each other. So Jesus used that understanding of sacri,ce to explain his gift of self. He would die on the cross as a sacri,ce to the Father and we would share in the meal by consuming bread and wine, which are his Body and Blood. at meal is shared today in the Eucharist. Better than the pagan sacri,ce, the Eucharist unites us with God becauseJesus is both human and divine. His humanity allowed him to represent us to the Father, asalawyer represents a client to the court. Jesus' divinity allowed his sacri,ce to be worthy of the Father, as no merely human gift could be. So giving his life on the cross was the best and only way that he could oer a true sacri,ce to the Father. e Eucharist also unites us to one another. We share this meal with other Christians as a sign of our common faith. Christ who gave himself to the Father on the cross also gives himself to us in the Eucharist. And because the food we share is the Body and Blood of Christ, we in a sense become what we eat. So we are all members of the Body Corpus Christi Procession At the end of the 10:00 AM Mass today, there will be a procession during which the Blessed Sacrament will be carried through the Ca thedral, followed by the congregation, and concluding in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. All are encouraged to participate and celebrate this most precious gift of our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. of Christ. Weshow this by our love, by sharing our faith, by forgiving each other, and by our service to each other. If we believe that Jesus is divine, we must believe his word that the Eucharist is truly his Body and Blood, given for us.

The LOVE of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by Beth Casteel Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Feast Day Friday, June 12 Our three and six year old granddaughters live with us. ey frequently say, "I love you so much in my little heart." To be loved with this kind of purity shocks me, and yet it is the same unconditional love that Jesus oers when we unite our hearts to His. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus extends back to the Church fathers, but the current feast day, always a Friday in June, but movable due to the Easter season, was established by Pope Pius IX in 1856 based upon revelations of Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1675. Our Catholic community recites a particular devotion each day after each daily Mass, with the Prayer to the Sacred Heart on Wednesdays, the service which I regularly attend. Often, I hurriedly recite the prayer, anxious to move on with my day and frustrated that reciting it means ri-ing through my purse for a copy. A week before last year's feast,Ibegan a novena to the Sacred Heart on the Halo app. Around the same time,Ireceived a Sacred Heart prayer card in the mail with a Word on Fire promotion. My young adult daughter andIwere spending some time in Ohio, and I was using the time for prayer and writing.Aday before beginning the novena, I looked online for a nearby church with a noon Mass. I found Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. Some would call these "God moments." Others would say they were just a coincidence. But rivers of redemption run through our lives. We can the rapids, or we can stand on the side and watch it pass us by. is period of my life provided a revelation in which rejection was replaced with rejoicing, and I embraced the radical richness of reform, rather than returning to regret. jump on a raft and ride e second reading from the ,rst letter of John tells us that "whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love." In his Sacred Heart, Jesus can unite to our hearts and reignite our -ame. Everything that -ows from Him and to Him has purpose. e Gospel for this feast proclaims, "I give praiseto you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones," My little granddaughters carry this wisdom in their hearts. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. As our country prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will consecrate the United States of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 11, the eve of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart. All are invited to pray the Prayer of Consecration. Prayer of Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus O Most Sacred Heart of Jesus: You know the longings of our hearts, and you desire that we enjoy friendship with you. From your pierced side, you have poured out the wellspring of life, for which we thirst. Your heart burns withalove for all people to return to a right relationship with you. We celebrate the abundant gifts you have given this nation, founded on the self-evident truths that our Creator has endowed all people with the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. May our hearts be united to yours, so that our families and communities enjoy peace and happiness; may broken relationships be reconciled, injustices repaired, and the wounds of our land be healed. May your holy Catholic Church serve as a sign, pointing all people to your infinite love. O Desire of Nations and Center of History, we ask you to bless these United States of America. Saint Anthony of Padua Feast Day Saturday, June 13 Saint Anthony of Padua is one the most beloved and admired saints in the Church. A Franciscan friar and a Doctor of the Church, he is considered one of the greatest preachers in the history of Christianity. Anthony was born on the Feast of the Assumption in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195 to a wealthy and educated family of the Portuguese nobility. He entered the Augustinian religious community at an early age where he devoted himself to the study of sacred scripture and Latin classics. He felt a call to" missionary work, however, and was given permission to join the Franciscan Order when he was 26 years old. Anthony traveled tirelessly to preach what it meant to live according to the Gospel. He is believed to have made as many as 400 trips to towns in both northern Italy and southern France where he attracted people by the thousands. He was so popular a preacher that he often had to speak in public squares and marketplaces rather than churches. So simple, yet compelling and inspiring was Anthony's teaching of the Catholic faith that he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946. Anthony knew that preaching was not enough to help people understand how to follow Jesus Christ. He believed he had to give witness to the Gospel by the way he lived his personal life. So, he adopted and maintained a simple lifestyle consistent with what he believed the Gospel was calling him to. He became one of Francis of Assisi's favorite disciples and closest friend. The last months of Anthony's life were lived in Padua, Italy, with preaching, hearing confessions, and assisting those in debt. He died there on June 13, 1231 at the age of 36 and was proclaimed a saint less than one year after his death. So simple, yet compelling and inspiring was Anthony's teaching of the Catholic faith that he was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946. Anthony is best known as the saint to whom one prays to find a lost article. When a novice took his Psalter without permission, Anthony prayed for the book's return. After the novice was visited by a ghost in a frightening nightmare, he rushed to give the book back to Anthony. Many people do not know, though, that St. Anthony is the patron of other causes. He is the patron saint of Brazil and Portugal, the poor, barren women, harvests, and those who travel. His feast day is June 13.

Treasures from our Tradition Ordinary Time beckons, and so on this Sunday we surrender the last glimmers of paschal joy as we celebrate the renewal of our life around the table of the Eucharist. is feast reminds us that the goal of the catechumen's journey through Lent is not the bap- tismal font at Easter, but rather the experience of Pentecost. It is all about life lived in the Spirit's embrace in relationship to the Body of Christ, which is found both "on the table" and "at the table." e season of con,rmation is also drawing to a close, and this feast serves as a reminder that this sacrament, a solemn sending from font to table, is keyed to renewed vigor. Con,rmation has sometimes been sadly misunderstood as a kind of graduation from religious formation, but it is nothing of the sort. It is about being led by the Lord Jesus to the place where the Spirit -ourishes, and where the gifts of the Spirit are most easily detectable. After next week we will resume our consideration of the sacrament of con,rmation, its rich and somewhat tangled history, its challenging theology, and its changing celebration.
