FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ZECHARIAH 9:9-10; ROMANS 8:9, 11-13; MATTHEW 11:25-30

The 4th of July is a significant day for our country, but also for me and my relationship with our parishes in Loveland: July 4, 2022, was the date of my first Mass as the new parochial vicar [assistant] at St. Columban and St. Margaret of York. And who would have thought at that time that 12 months later I would be officially assigned as your new pastor! And now, it's hard to believe that I have been here four years already. All of you have made the time go so fast! We have been making a holy journey together, and I am very grateful that you are in my life.

The 4th of July also brings to mind for me a long-ago visit to the Statue of Liberty, and especially the impact of the words inscribed on it: "Give me your tired, your poor…" In the Gospel reading provided for us for this weekend. Jesus says something similar, but much more powerful: "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest."

The words of Jesus, like the words on the statue, point out a harbor of safety and the promise of a better life. But Jesus goes far beyond what even our great country can pledge. Because He gives us an invitation to share in His life, take His yoke on our shoulders, and find rest.

Moreover, in our Gospel passage for this Sunday, His offer follows an astonishing prayer of ecstasy and praise, in which the intimate relationship of the Father and the Son is revealed, as well as how important we [the 'little ones'] are to Jesus. So, when He says: "Come to me," He is drawing us into His life with the Father and the Holy Spirit…a life in the Trinity…a life of perfect love.

Jesus helps us understand how important our lives are to Him: He instructs us and wants us to know that we are unconditionally loved by God; He comforts us in our times of pain, grief and distress; and He calls us to salvation: a life with Him in heaven forever. This is why we can and must "Come to Him" time and time again: He is everything we need. He is the answer to all our hopes and prayers. He is Jesus. And He gives us a reason for celebrating our freedom as God's beloved children, and to celebrate it every day…not only on a 4th of July weekend. Jesus offers us more than we can ever ask or imagine. God bless us all, and God bless America!
