Dear Parishioners,

This Saturday our nation celebrates July 4th so may I be the first to wish all of you a happy Semiquincentennial! I could also wish you a happy Sestercentennial, or happy Quarter Millennium. You may know it better as America-250. On this date back in 1776, the Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain, King George III, and were now united, free, and independent states. A new nation was born. Of course, this national holiday is a time for picnics, family gatherings, firework displays, parades, and the celebration of Mass. It just seemed like yesterday when we celebrated the country's Bicentennial in 1976. I remember my dad packing the family in the 1972 Chevy Impala and driving two days from Chicago to Estes Park, Colorado and the Rocky Mountains. It was the first time I had ever seen mountains, let alone snow-capped mountains. I still remember having a snowball fight with my two brothers on Longs Peak or another nearby mountain over the 4th of July holiday. At higher elevations, above 12,000 feet, some of the snow never melts. Snow will not be a problem this weekend in the Bedford/Solon area. If anything, we will have to contend with heat indices at or above 100 degrees.

Since the 4th of July falls on Saturday, and neither Saint Mary, Bedford nor Saint Rita, Solon has a Saturday morning daily Mass, we will not be celebrating the Mass for Independence Day. The Vigil Mass on Saturday afternoon will be for the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time. That being said, the second option for the Collect (Opening Prayer) for Independence Day reminds us that even though we have achieved our independence, there is still more work to do to achieve peace and justice in our country: "Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when our country claimed its place among the family of nations; for what has been achieved we give you thanks, for the work that remains we ask your help, and as you have called us from many peoples to be one nation, grant that, under your providence, our country may share your blessings with all the people of the Earth." That's a wonderful prayer to keep in our hearts as we celebrate with family and friends this weekend. Stay cool and hydrated!
