Gentleness and Humility
Jesus invites us with these comforting words: "Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart, and you will find rest for your souls." In a world that often values power, competition, and self-promotion, gentleness and humility may seem like outdated virtues. Yet they remain at the very heart of Christian discipleship.
Gentleness is often mistaken for weakness. Many believe that to succeed in life, we must be tough and never show vulnerability. But true gentleness is not weakness, it is strength under control. Jesus Himself was gentle, especially with the poor, the sick, the sinner, and the brokenhearted. Yet He was never timid. When the holiness of His Father's house was threatened, He boldly drove the money changers from the Temple. His gentleness flowed from inner strength, not fear.
It takes courage and confidence to be truly gentle. A gentle person does not seek to dominate others but to encourage and nurture them. As Henri Nouwen beautifully wrote, "A gentle person treads lightly, listens carefully, loves tenderly, and touches with reverence." These are qualities that heal relationships and reflect the compassionate heart of Christ.
Humility, too, is often misunderstood. It does not mean thinking less of ourselves or denying the gifts God has given us. Rather, humility means recognizing that every blessing comes from Him. A humble person knows that all they have and all they are is a gift from God's loving hand. This awareness frees us from pride and opens our hearts to serve others with joy.
Jesus promises that those who embrace gentleness and humility will find peace. Imagine how different our homes, our parish, and our world would be if we treated one another with greater kindness, patience, and respect. The proud and insensitive often make life burdensome for themselves and those around them. But the gentle and humble lighten the burdens of others and become instruments of God's peace.
May we strive each day to grow in these Christ-like virtues, remembering the words of St. Seraphim of Sarov: "Acquire inner peace, and thousands around you will be saved." When Christ's gentleness and humility take root in our hearts, His peace naturally flows into the lives of those we meet.

Dear God, Bless this land that we love, a land You created, in love. We are at our best when we're close to You. Please inspire, guide, and govern our leaders and our vision, that our greatness may be founded in and defined in You. Amen.
