Archbishop Gustavo Meditation

Every year, we receive this simple and fragile sign — ashes on our foreheads. Dust traced in the form of a cross. Once, this sign was linked to public penance and even shame. It can almost feel like a badge of identity. And it is good not to be ashamed of Christ. But the true mark is not what rests on our skin for a few hours. The true mark is what the Holy Spirit engraves in the heart. Ashes remind us that life is brief. What remains is love. What remains is the heart turned toward God. Not with appearances. With your heart. This is a gift moment. The Church traces a cross of ashes so that we may choose to carry Christ within. The external sign fades. The inner decision can remain. You and I can decide that this Lent will leave a lasting imprint: a softer heart, a clearer conscience, a freer spirit. Prayer refocuses our gaze. Fasting lightens what weighs us down. Almsgiving opens our hands and our hearts to others and to God. When we focus on the Lord Jesus and His love, the cross is no longer a burden alone; it becomes a path of meaning. May this Lent engrave in us the joy of reconciliation, the freedom of simplicity, and the courage of authentic love.
