Dear Friends of Saint Mary's Basilica,
The day after our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence, the Church places before us a meek King.
In the first reading, the prophet Zechariah says, "See, your king shall come to you; a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass." In the Gospel, Jesus says, "Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart."
This is striking. The Lord does not reveal freedom as domination, self-assertion, or the ability to do whatever we want. He reveals freedom as meekness: strength surrendered to love.
There is truth in the old idea that discipline gives freedom. A musician, athlete, or scholar becomes free through practice, sacrifice, and self-denial. But Christianity goes deeper. Love is the truest discipline. Love is the reason self-denial becomes beautiful instead of merely difficult.
The candles at every Mass preach this silently. A candle gives light and warmth by allowing itself to be consumed. It does not protect itself from being spent. It becomes fruitful by giving itself away.
This is the freedom of Christ. This is the freedom of the "little ones." Not weakness, not fear, not passivity, but the freedom of those who know that life is received from God and therefore can be given away in love.
May Christ, meek and humble of heart, teach us to be free: free from pride, free from resentment, free from self-protection, and free to love.

In your hands, O Lord, we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters. In this life you embraced them with your tender love; deliver them now from every evil and bid them eternal rest. The old order has passed away: welcome them into paradise, where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain, but fullness of peace and joy with your Son and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen.
