Spiritual Insight: The Transfiguration and Lent
The Gospel today leads us up the mountain with Jesus, Peter, James, and John, where the Transfiguration takes place. In the midst of the Lenten journey, a season often marked by sacrifice, struggle, and self-examination, we are given this moment of light and glory. Jesus is revealed in dazzling brilliance, speaking with Moses and Elijah, while the voice of the Father proclaims, "This is my
beloved Son listen to him." This scene is not an escape from the road to the cross, but a preparation for it.
The disciples had already begun to follow Jesus, yet they did not fully understand who he was or what his mission would require. On the mountain, they are allowed to glimpse Jesus' true identity. His radiant appearance reminds them that the suffering he will endure is not the end of the story. Glory lies beyond the cross. For us, this is a powerful Lenten reminder: God does not promise a life free of hardship, but he does promise transformation through faithfulness. Peter's instinct to build tents and remain on the mountain is deeply human. Who wouldn't want to stay in a moment of clarity, peace, and awe? Yet the Transfiguration is temporary. Jesus leads the disciples back down the mountain and toward Jerusalem. Lent calls us to a similar movement. We may encounter moments of consolation in prayer, worship, or community, but discipleship also demands that we return to daily life, carrying those moments with us as strength for
the journey. The Father's command, "Listen to him," stands at the heart of this Gospel. Lent is a season for intentional listening. In the noise of modern life, it is easy to hear many voices: fear, ambition, distraction but the voice of Christ can be drowned out. To listen to Jesus means more than hearing his words; it means allowing them to shape our choices, our relationships, and our priorities. It means trusting him even when the path leads through uncertainty or sacrifice.
As we continue through Lent, the Transfiguration encourages us to persevere. When the road feels heavy, we are reminded of the light that awaits. When faith feels fragile, we are assured that God is still at work, transforming us little by little. By listening to Christ and following him beyond the mountain, we move closer to the resurrection promise that Lent prepares us to receive. Amen!
